Belgian Officer in Humanitarian Visa Case to Appear in Court
A Belgian police officer accused of leaking confidential information about an investigation into humanitarian visas involving Belgian politician Melikan Kucam is due to appear before a court in Antwerp tomorrow.
The officer, who is from the Belgian city of Diest, was arrested nearly three weeks ago on suspicion of violating professional secrecy. He worked for the central services of the Belgian Federal Police and is accused of sharing information related to the investigation.
After his arrest, the court decided a few days later that he could leave custody and serve the remainder of his detention at home so that he could be with his family.
Prosecutors Appeal Decision
The public prosecutor’s office appealed the decision to release the officer to home detention. As a result, a court in Antwerp will reconsider his detention and decide whether he should be taken back into custody.
The case is linked to the wider investigation into the issuing of humanitarian visas, which has previously involved Belgian politician Melikan Kucam.
Melikan Kucam Also Due in Court
Melikan Kucam, who is considered the main suspect in the humanitarian visa case, is also expected to appear before the court tomorrow.
Kucam has been accused of receiving large amounts of money through intermediaries in connection with bringing people to Belgium using humanitarian visas. He has strongly denied the allegations and rejects the accusations against him.
The court proceedings are expected to provide further information about the allegations against both the police officer and Kucam as the investigation continues.
