Brussels Plans to End 400-Euro Fridge Grant

The City of Brussels plans to end a financial grant that helps low-income residents buy energy-efficient refrigerators, with the change expected to take effect on January 1, 2027.
The grant currently provides eligible households with up to 400 euros toward the purchase of a refrigerator rated A, B or C for energy efficiency. Families with four or more members can also receive an additional 100 euros.
However, the city administration wants to abolish the program as part of efforts to reduce spending amid financial pressure on the municipal budget.
The proposal is expected to be considered by the city council on Monday evening. If approved, residents will no longer be able to apply for the grant from the start of 2027.
City officials have also questioned whether the subsidy remains necessary, pointing out that refrigerators currently available on the market already offer relatively good energy performance.
The planned change could affect low-income households that rely on financial assistance to replace old appliances with more energy-efficient models.
Residents considering buying a new refrigerator may therefore want to check the current grant conditions and application deadlines before the program potentially ends.
