Brussels Police Officer Killed in Shooting in Jette

A police officer was shot and killed in Brussels during an operation to intercept a stolen vehicle late Monday night, October 12. The incident in Jette was followed by news of a second fatal shooting in the neighboring municipality of Ixelles, raising questions about two serious incidents reported in the Belgian capital on the same night.

The officer, identified as Noureddine, was a Belgian of Moroccan origin. The vehicle from which shots were reportedly fired at the officer was carrying Polish license plates. The suspects’ identities and backgrounds have not been officially confirmed, and the investigation into the fatal shooting is ongoing.

Officer Killed During Stolen Vehicle Operation

The shooting in Jette happened shortly before midnight on Carton de Wiart Avenue, near Belgica metro station.

The officer belonged to the Anti-Robbery Brigade of the Brussels-Capital/Ixelles police zone. According to preliminary information, officers were responding to a stolen vehicle linked to a carjacking in Tubize, in Walloon Brabant.

An automatic number plate recognition camera reportedly detected the vehicle in Jette, prompting police to launch an interception operation.

Investigators are examining reports that the suspects opened fire when officers arrived. The police officer suffered a gunshot wound and was taken to hospital, where he later died.

The circumstances surrounding the confrontation remain under investigation.

Suspects Reportedly Opened Fire on Police

Preliminary accounts indicate that the confrontation escalated rapidly when officers approached the vehicle.

Investigators reportedly discovered three weapons inside the stolen car after the shooting. Belgian media also reported that at least one suspect had been arrested.

The Brussels Federal Judicial Police is handling the investigation. Authorities are working to establish the sequence of events and determine the role of everyone involved.

Further details about the suspects and any potential charges should be treated as unconfirmed until officially announced.

Man Killed in Separate Shooting in Ixelles

Another man was killed in a shooting on Wiertz Street in Ixelles, close to the European Parliament.

Police secured the area around the building where the shooting occurred. Investigators reportedly found several bullet impacts, while access to the building and its underground parking area was monitored as evidence was collected.

The circumstances of this second fatal shooting remain unclear.

Despite the timing and geographic proximity of the two incidents, a direct connection has not been established. Investigators must determine whether the cases are related or represent separate criminal incidents.

Police Union Highlights Dangers Facing Officers

The officer’s death has prompted renewed concern about the risks police personnel face while carrying out their duties.

Joery Dehaes, a representative of the NSPV police union, expressed condolences to the officer’s family and colleagues. He estimated that 36 police officers had died while on duty over a 25-year period, including deaths resulting from different circumstances.

Dehaes also highlighted the impact of violence against police officers and the need for better support for personnel affected by physical injuries, psychological trauma and the administrative consequences of incidents on duty.

Belgian Leaders Express Condolences

Belgian and Brussels officials expressed their sympathy following the officer’s death.

Brussels Mayor Philippe Close and Prime Minister Bart De Wever paid tribute to the officer and acknowledged the risks faced by police personnel in protecting the public.

Their messages focused on supporting the officer’s family, friends and colleagues during a difficult time.

Investigation Continues

The investigations into the fatal shooting in Jette and the death in Ixelles are continuing. Authorities are expected to clarify the circumstances of both incidents as further evidence becomes available.

For now, the confirmed central fact is that a Brussels police officer died after being shot during an operation involving a stolen vehicle. The circumstances of the second death and any possible link between the cases remain matters for investigators to establish.

Belgium Brief will continue to follow the case and report further developments when they are confirmed.
