Buses in Belgium Suspended Due to Snow and Ice

Due to severe weather conditions, Flemish public transport operator De Lijn has temporarily suspended bus services across Limburg province. Snowfall has stopped in other parts of Belgium, but a yellow weather warning remains in place until Saturday afternoon because of slippery roads.
“Due to severe weather conditions in Limburg, our buses are no longer operating in the province for the time being,” De Lijn said in a post on social media.
The warning refers mainly to snowfall and icy road conditions.
De Lijn Takes Precautionary Measures
De Lijn spokesperson Frederik Wittouck said the suspension was a precautionary measure following several minor incidents across the province.
The company wanted to reduce the risk of further accidents as road conditions deteriorated.
Drivers who were already on the road could assess the situation themselves. If they considered conditions unsafe, they could return to their depots. Otherwise, they could continue their routes if they believed it was safe to do so.
De Lijn planned to reassess the situation in Limburg at 3 p.m.
Limburg Hit Hardest by Snowfall
Limburg experienced the heaviest snowfall in Belgium on Friday. Low temperatures made roads particularly slippery, and much of the province was covered in snow.
Authorities also received reports of icy sidewalks and bicycle paths, creating additional risks for pedestrians and cyclists.
Heavy snowfall also forced the postponement of the football match between Jong Genk and SL16 FC in Belgium’s Challenger Pro League, formerly known as the First Division B.
Snow Stops in Other Parts of Belgium
Southern Limburg was largely spared from the snowfall. In other parts of the country, snow had stopped falling by Friday morning, and in many areas it had disappeared from the streets by around 1 p.m.
However, the yellow weather warning remained in effect until Saturday afternoon because slippery roads continued to pose a risk.
Residents were advised to remain cautious when travelling, particularly in areas where snow and ice had not yet cleared.
