Calls for Tax Cuts for Low-Income Workers in Belgium

Belgian French-speaking green party Ecolo launched a campaign urging parliament to support a tax reform that it says could give low- and middle-income earners up to 300 euros more in net income per month.

The proposal, known as the “Solidarity Tax Credit,” is one of the party’s priorities for the coming months.

Ecolo’s co-presidents, Jean-Marc Nollet and Rajae Maouane, outlined the party’s plans in a New Year message to the Belgian press on Monday.

Nollet argued that expanding the social energy tariff would not be enough to support struggling households. He called for a tax credit as part of a broader tax reform that Finance Minister Vincent Van Peteghem of the CD&V party was expected to present to parliament.

According to Ecolo, the proposed measure could provide up to 300 euros a month in additional net income for people on low and middle incomes.

The party cited several examples of potential benefits, including 286 euros per month for a childcare worker, 268 euros for hospital cleaners, and 207 euros for waiters, waitresses, hairdressers and beauty professionals with 20 years of experience.

These figures reflect Ecolo’s proposal and should not be interpreted as payments that have already been approved or introduced.

Ecolo Also Wants Lower Taxes on Public Transport and Produce

The party said it would also push for lower taxes on public transport, fruit and vegetables in the coming months.

Another priority is tackling corruption and drug trafficking in Belgium. Ecolo also called for a special force to help protect the Port of Antwerp, which has faced concerns over drug-related crime.

The proposed Solidarity Tax Credit remains a political demand rather than an established benefit. Any changes would depend on the government’s tax reform plans and the decisions taken by parliament.
