Ghent Police Catch 33 Cyclists Running Red Lights in 40 Minutes

Police in Ghent caught 33 cyclists riding through red lights in just 40 minutes during a traffic enforcement operation at a busy intersection.
The check took place on Tuesday at the junction of Zwijnaardsesteenweg and Lucas de Heerestraat. Officers said many cyclists were ignoring temporary traffic lights installed near roadworks.
With thousands of students returning to Ghent at the start of the academic year, bicycle traffic in the city has increased again. Police say the latest figures show why traffic rules must apply to everyone, including cyclists.
Cyclists Face a Fine of More Than 211 Euros
According to Ghent police spokesperson Matto Langeraert, officers organized the targeted operation after noticing that cyclists were frequently ignoring the temporary signals.
Cyclists caught running a red light face a fine of 201 euros, plus 10.67 euros in administrative costs. That brings the total to 211.67 euros.
Police warned that ignoring a red light can put both cyclists and other road users at risk.
“Red means red, including for cyclists,” the police said. They also asked riders to consider whether saving a few seconds is worth paying more than 211 euros.
More Traffic Checks Planned in Ghent
The police said further targeted enforcement operations are planned. However, the checks will not focus only on cyclists running red lights.
Officers will continue monitoring different traffic violations across Ghent, regardless of whether the person involved is riding a bicycle or driving a car.
Langeraert explained that if officers had spotted a motorist using a mobile phone during the cycling enforcement operation, they would have taken action against that driver as well.
The message from police is straightforward: all road users must obey traffic signals. Waiting a few seconds at a red light can help prevent accidents and avoid a costly fine.
