Police Detain 10 Students During School Protests in Liège

Police in Liège detained 10 students on Monday during protests outside several schools, according to local authorities.

The arrests were administrative and the number is still provisional, police said.

The protests come just days after serious unrest in the city over the weekend, with tensions rising again around several schools on Monday morning.

Tensions Rise Outside Schools

The situation was initially calm near Institut Marie-Thérèse. At Saint-Barthélemy College, however, students gathered at the entrance and blocked teachers from entering the school. The school placed barriers around the entrance while staff monitored the situation.

The atmosphere later became more tense. Some students threw eggs, set off fireworks and smoke bombs, and threw buckets of water into the crowd. Police also reported the presence of masked young people, some of whom were carrying Palestinian flags.

Around 9:15 a.m., a larger group arrived near Saint-Barthélemy College and more fireworks were set off.

Police Increase Presence

Police were deployed in large numbers around the schools as the situation developed.

There were also disturbances in nearby Herstal. According to Belgian broadcaster RTBF, masked young people reportedly moved toward a school carrying barriers.

Police continued to closely monitor the area. Some students said they wanted to organize a march through central Liège, similar to one held on Friday. However, no such march had been officially confirmed at the time of the latest reports.

For now, the protests remain concentrated around schools, with the largest gathering reported near Saint-Barthélemy College.

Authorities are expected to continue monitoring the situation as the day develops.
