Hallo beste kijkers, ik ga mezelf eventjes voorstellen

Hello, everyone. Let me introduce myself.

Ik ben Mark, ik kom uit Spanje en woon nu al vier jaar in België.

My name is Mark. I am from Spain, and I have been living in Belgium for four years now.

Toen ik hier aankwam wilde ik eerst de Franse taal leren

When I first arrived here, I wanted to learn French.

Maar ben dan toch van gedacht veranderd

But then I changed my mind.

Toen ik voor het eerst Nederlands hoorde

When I heard Dutch for the first time,

Dacht ik wat een gemakkelijke taal

I thought, “What an easy language.”

Omdat het een beetje op de Engelse taal leek

Because it sounded a little like English.

Maar toen ik mij verdiepte bleek het niet te zijn zoals ik verwacht had

But when I started studying the language more deeply, I realized that it was not as easy as I had expected.

Ja mensen, het is een moeilijke taal voor ons om te leren

Yes, everyone, it is a difficult language for us to learn.

Omdat we in het Arabisch de grammatica anders gebruiken dan in het Nederlands

This is because we use grammar differently in Arabic than we do in Dutch.

Bijvoorbeeld in het Nederlands staat het werkwoord soms op de eerste plaats van de zin

For example, in Dutch, the verb sometimes comes at the beginning of the sentence.

Maar ook soms na subject of op het einde van de zin

But it can also come after the subject or at the end of the sentence, depending on the sentence structure.

Maar ondanks dit alles blijft het toch een mooie taal en ik vind ze geweldig

Despite all of this, Dutch is still a beautiful language, and I really enjoy it.

Toch ga ik voor jullie niet verbergen de eerste maand dat ik in de klas zat om de taal te leren begreep ik er niets van

Still, I will not hide from you that during my first month in class learning the language, I did not understand anything.

Dan pas ervaarde ik dat het een moeilijke taal was

That was when I realized that Dutch was actually a difficult language.

Door veel te studeren en te oefenen thuis en het ook bekijken van Nederlandse tekenfilms, en het praten met de mensen op straat is alles makkelijker in orde gekomen

By studying and practicing a lot at home, watching Dutch cartoons, and talking to people on the street, everything gradually became easier.

Maar eens ik dan ging werken werd het mij weer moeilijker om de mensen te begrijpen omdat ze vaak dialect praten

But once I started working, it became difficult for me to understand people again because they often spoke in a local dialect.

In het begin begreep ik hun niet

At first, I could not understand them.

Toen ze me vroegen iets te doen zei ik altijd ja ja ja

When they asked me to do something, I would always say, “Yes, yes, yes.”

Maar over het algemeen begreep ik niet wat ze bedoelden

But most of the time, I did not understand what they actually meant.

Na een periode van werken kwam de tijd voor vakantie en ging ik naar Spanje

After working for some time, it was time for a vacation, so I went to Spain, more specifically to Barcelona, for fifteen days. It is a very beautiful city, and I will be honest, it is definitely worth visiting.

Maar eenmaal ik terug in België kwam, dan pas, was het een ramp voor mij

But when I returned to Belgium, things became difficult for me again because I had forgotten many words.

Ik was veel woorden vergeten

I had forgotten many words.

En dan besliste ik maar om naar school te gaan en dit voor twee maanden

So I decided to go back to school and study Dutch for two months.

Nu ben ik benieuwd om te weten wat jullie vinden van mijn Nederlands

Now I would like to know what you think about my Dutch.

Luister maar niet naar mijn accent of uitspraak

Do not pay too much attention to my accent or pronunciation. This is because I was not.
