Two Killed in Horrific Wrong-Way Crash on Belgian Highway

A horrific crash on Belgium’s A12 highway on Friday evening left two people dead and another seriously injured.

The accident happened when a driver entered the highway in the wrong direction, causing a head-on collision between a Citroën and a Hyundai.

One witness, named Turgay Fadit, described the terrifying moment he saw the Citroën’s headlights coming toward him. He quickly swerved to avoid a collision.

However, a 60-year-old woman driving the Hyundai was not as fortunate. She died at the scene, while her husband suffered serious injuries and was taken to the hospital. The 42-year-old driver traveling in the wrong direction also died at the scene.

Investigation Underway to Determine the Cause

The public prosecutor’s office in Vilvoorde has launched an investigation into the cause and circumstances of the crash.

A forensic doctor and a traffic expert have been appointed to help establish what happened. Toxicology tests and an autopsy of the wrong-way driver are planned. The vehicles involved have also been seized for examination by specialists.

Highway Completely Closed After the Crash

The accident led to the complete closure of the A12 highway toward Antwerp on Friday evening. Vehicles caught in the traffic were directed to leave the highway at the Meise exit.

Adding to the shock, warnings about a wrong-way driver on the highway had reportedly circulated on social media before the collision. Witness Turgay Fadit said he saw the driver traveling at high speed shortly before the crash.

Other witnesses claimed that the driver had stopped on the roadside to urinate before continuing in the wrong direction.

Warning for Drivers in Belgium

The crash highlights the importance of quickly warning drivers about vehicles traveling in the wrong direction on Belgian highways. In such situations, a timely warning can mean the difference between life and death. Investigators are continuing to determine the cause of the fatal accident.
