Limburg Dentist Suspected of 188,000 Euro RIZIV Fraud

A dentist in Limburg is suspected of social fraud after two employees allegedly performed dental procedures without the required qualifications or an RIZIV registration number.

According to the Limburg Labor Prosecutor’s Office, the employees allegedly carried out procedures including administering anesthesia and performing root canal treatments.

The dentist, identified as P.D., is suspected of having employed the two people through his company to perform dental work despite the fact that they did not have the required diploma or an RIZIV number.

The treatments were allegedly billed through the dentist’s RIZIV number, allowing the procedures to be submitted for reimbursement.

Employees Reportedly Went to Police

The investigation took a new turn in mid-August when the two employees went to the police themselves.

They reportedly filed a complaint against their employer, alleging, among other things, threats and pressure to perform dental procedures they were not legally qualified to carry out.

Based on their statements, investigators carried out four searches at properties in Lanaken, Herk-de-Stad, Maasmechelen and Dilsen-Stokkem.

All of the suspects were questioned and were later released by the investigating judge while the investigation continues.

More Than 188,000 Euro Allegedly Involved

According to an initial estimate by RIZIV, Belgium’s National Institute for Health and Disability Insurance, the suspected unlawful financial benefit exceeded 188,000 euro in 2021.

The exact amount is still being investigated and could change as investigators examine the financial records and other evidence.

The investigation was conducted by the Lanaken-Maasmechelen Police Zone and the Federal Judicial Police Limburg under the direction of the investigating judge.

At this stage, the allegations remain part of an ongoing investigation. The suspects have been released pending further proceedings and have not been convicted.
