Belgian Citizenship: Stricter Rules and New Costs in 2026

Belgium has tightened the financial requirements for people seeking Belgian citizenship, making the application process more expensive. Applicants must also meet strict legal residence, language, social integration and, in many cases, employment requirements.

The changes come as Belgium continues to attract people from around the world who want to build their lives in the country and obtain Belgian nationality.

Belgian Citizenship Now Costs 1,000 Euros

One of the biggest changes is the increase in the registration fee for acquiring Belgian nationality, from 150 euros to 1,000 euros. The fee is subject to annual indexation, and applicants may face additional expenses for translations and other documents.

The higher cost adds another financial hurdle for people planning to become Belgian citizens.

Who Can Apply for Belgian Citizenship?

In most cases, adults can apply after five years of legal residence in Belgium, provided they meet the other conditions.

Applicants generally need to demonstrate knowledge of Dutch, French or German, depending on their circumstances. They must also prove social integration and, for the standard five-year route, economic participation.

This may involve providing evidence of employment, professional training, an integration course or recognized educational qualifications.

People applying after ten years of legal residence can follow a different route, but they must still demonstrate language knowledge and participation in the social, economic or cultural life of their community.

Employment and Integration Matter

Belgian citizenship is not granted automatically after five years in the country. Applicants must meet the conditions for their specific legal pathway and provide the necessary supporting documents.

For the standard five-year route, the rules generally require proof of at least 468 days of employment during the previous five years, or qualifying social security contributions for self-employed workers.

Different conditions apply to certain applicants, including spouses of Belgian citizens, parents of Belgian children, and people who cannot work because of a disability or who have reached retirement age.

Moroccan, Syrian and Other Communities

Moroccan and Syrian nationals have historically accounted for significant numbers of people acquiring Belgian citizenship. Other communities, including Romanian, Afghan, Turkish and Italian nationals, have also featured prominently in nationality statistics.

Figures published for 2024 showed a strong increase in citizenship acquisitions. However, those figures are historical and should not be treated as the latest annual totals.

The number of people becoming Belgian citizens reflects changes in migration, family circumstances and long-term settlement in the country.

How to Apply for Belgian Citizenship?

Applications are generally submitted through the municipality where the applicant has their main residence. The local authority checks the documents and whether the legal requirements have been met.

Because the conditions depend on each applicant’s situation, anyone considering applying should confirm the current requirements and fees with their municipality before submitting an application.

For many long-term residents, Belgian citizenship remains an important step toward a more secure future in the country. But meeting the residence requirement alone is not enough: applicants must also satisfy the relevant legal, language and integration rules.
