Belgian Customer Questions MediaMarkt Prices During Sales

A Belgian customer has questioned the pricing policy of MediaMarkt after sharing photos on Facebook that appeared to show some products becoming more expensive during a sale than they had been before the discounts.
The customer claimed that the photos showed how certain products were being offered at higher prices during the promotional period, raising questions about how the discounts were being calculated and presented to shoppers.
Customer Questions MediaMarkt Coffee Machine Price
The customer, named Trick Ariel, said on Facebook that he had been interested in an espresso coffee machine that was advertised for 498 euro on December 23, 2018.
When he returned to the store on January 8, 2019, he found the same coffee machine advertised at 522 euro, reduced from a listed price of 622 euro, representing a 100 euro discount.
However, the new promotional price was still 24 euro higher than the 498 euro price he had seen about two weeks earlier, according to the photos he shared online.
The frustrated customer posted on Facebook: “MediaMarkt, I’m not crazy after all!”
MediaMarkt Responds to Pricing Complaint
This was not the first time that photos showing questionable or unusual MediaMarkt deals had circulated on social media, with customers raising concerns about products appearing to have higher prices during promotional campaigns.
Stefan De Bricker, a manager at MediaMarkt, acknowledged that unusual situations can sometimes occur, but said the company operates within the law and aims to offer the lowest price in such cases.
De Bricker explained that product prices can change from one season to another and said that promotional prices are normally planned several months in advance.
He also said that, in exceptional situations, a product could be slightly more expensive in January than it had been previously because the company may have run a one-day promotion or changed the price after another promotional offer ended.
The case highlights why shoppers may want to compare prices over time rather than relying only on the size of a discount shown on a promotional label.
