News of the 1 euro homes also attracted Tavia McNaughton, an Australian technology worker who became interested in the Sicilian town of Gangi after hearing about the unusual property offers.
McNaughton said she initially expected to find newer homes, but the properties she had visited so far were older than she had expected, although that did not stop her from considering an investment.
She said she was still willing to invest because even if a house required renovation, buying a property in the area could give her an ideal place to escape the winter in Melbourne, Australia.
Buyers Must Renovate the Homes
There is an important condition attached to the 1 euro property deal, as new owners are required to renovate their homes within three years after purchasing them.
The renovation must cost at least 15,000 euro, while buyers must also provide a 5,000 euro deposit that will be returned once the renovation work has been completed.
The deal therefore does not mean that buyers can simply purchase a house for 1 euro and move in immediately, because the properties require investment and renovation, but for people willing to restore an old home, the program offers a way to become a property owner in Sicily at a very low initial purchase price.
