Belgian police are warning the public about a theft method in which criminals watch people enter their bank PIN before distracting them and stealing their cards.
On October 20, 2026, the HerKo police zone reported several cases involving a technique known as “shoulder surfing.” Criminals use this method to learn a victim’s PIN at an ATM or payment terminal, then try to steal the bank card and use it to withdraw cash or make purchases.
Police are investigating five incidents in Herent and Kortenberg. One happened inside a store, while the other four involved Cashpunt cash machines. Investigators have not confirmed whether the incidents are connected or identified those responsible.
How the ATM Theft Scam Works in Belgium
A thief may stand close to someone using an ATM or watch their hands from another angle to see their PIN.
Once the PIN is known, the criminal may create a distraction, take the victim’s bank card and attempt to use both the card and PIN to access the account.
The suspect may appear to be an ordinary customer waiting in line or may offer help that was never requested. Police advise people to be cautious if a stranger stands too close, interrupts a transaction or suddenly tries to distract them.
How to Protect Your Bank Card and PIN
Police recommend a few simple steps to reduce the risk of becoming a victim:
- Cover the keypad with your other hand when entering your PIN.
- Keep a safe distance from anyone standing behind you.
- Be cautious if a stranger offers unsolicited help at an ATM or payment terminal.
- Never share your PIN with anyone.
- Stop the transaction if you feel unsafe and can do so safely.
These precautions can help prevent criminals from learning your PIN and stealing your bank card.
What to Do If Your Bank Card Is Stolen
If your bank card goes missing or you suspect it has been stolen, block it immediately.
In Belgium, you can contact Card Stop at 078 170 170, which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You may also be able to block your card through your bank’s mobile app.
Check your bank account for unfamiliar transactions and contact your bank immediately if you notice suspicious activity. You should also report the incident to the police.
