Belgium Road Tax 2027: What Drivers Will Pay

Drivers in Wallonia could face a new annual cost from May 1, 2027, when Belgium plans to introduce a digital road vignette. The proposed system would require drivers to pay a fee to use the region’s road network, including motorists from abroad.
The big question is whether lower vehicle taxes will make up for the new charge.
How Much Will the Road Vignette Cost?
Under the proposed rates, the annual fee would depend on the vehicle’s emissions standard:
- 90 euros for electric cars.
- 100 euros for vehicles meeting Euro 4 standards or newer.
- 125 euros for older vehicles meeting Euro 0 to Euro 3 standards.
The measure would cover cars and light commercial vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tons. Foreign drivers using the roads would also be affected.
Will Drivers Pay More in 2027?
Wallonia plans to reduce its annual vehicle tax to offset some of the new cost. However, the reduction may not cover the full price of the vignette.
For example, owners of cars meeting Euro 4 standards with engine sizes between 751 and 1,950 cc could pay around 25 euros more per year after the reduction.
Electric car owners could face a net annual increase of approximately 33.74 euros.
The final amount will depend on the vehicle and the tax reduction that applies to it. The changes could therefore affect drivers differently, even if the government lowers existing vehicle taxes.
When Will the New System Start?
The planned launch date is May 1, 2027. The proposal is intended to help fund road infrastructure, with both Belgian and foreign motorists contributing to the costs.
However, drivers should keep in mind that the final rules and implementation details may still change before the system takes effect.
For motorists in Wallonia, the key point is simple: a lower annual vehicle tax does not necessarily mean lower overall costs. Depending on the car they drive, some people could end up paying more each year.
Belgium Brief will continue to follow the proposal and report any confirmed changes before the planned launch.
