Brussels Plans Dutch-Language Drug Treatment by 2029

Brussels is planning to expand access to drug addiction treatment for Dutch-speaking residents, with a goal of establishing an officially recognized service by 2029.
The initiative comes as drug treatment centers in Flemish Brabant report a sharp increase in requests for help from Dutch-speaking people living in Brussels. The city currently lacks dedicated Dutch-language outpatient drug treatment services, forcing some residents to seek support in nearby towns.
Why Brussels Needs More Treatment Services?
Dutch-language outpatient drug treatment services have been absent from the Brussels-Capital Region since 2011. As a result, people seeking specialized support may need to travel to centers in nearby municipalities, including Dilbeek and Asse.
Existing Dutch-language services in Brussels mainly focus on prevention and early detection rather than ongoing treatment and specialized guidance.
Elke Van den Brandt, president of the Flemish Community Commission (VGC), said there is a clear need for more specialized support for people struggling with drug use.
The growing number of referrals to treatment centers in Flemish Brabant has added pressure to services outside the capital.
New Support Planned With the Flemish Government
The VGC plans to work with the Flemish government to support a new Dutch-language outpatient service in Brussels.
The aim is to create an accessible place where Dutch-speaking residents can receive professional help with drug-related problems without having to travel outside the region.
The initiative was discussed in response to a question from Groen council member Celia Groothedde.
Target Date: 2029
Van den Brandt wants an officially recognized Dutch-language drug treatment service to be established by 2029, the end of the current legislative term.
The proposal is intended to address a gap in Brussels’ support system and make specialized treatment easier to access for Dutch-speaking residents.
The 2029 date is a target, however, and the service has not yet been established.
