Belgian Man Nears 1 Million Kilometers in 35 Year Old Audi 80
Martin Lefevere from Sint-Eloois-Winkel, near Ledegem, is about to reach a remarkable milestone. His 35-year-old Audi 80 is just days away from hitting 1 million kilometers on the odometer.
Martin says there is no special secret behind the car’s incredible mileage. “It’s a matter of luck, driving calmly and having a good car,” he says.
He also credits his years as a driving instructor for helping him avoid accidents. Martin says he always taught his students to keep a safe distance, check their mirrors and pay close attention to what is happening around them.
The 1991 Audi 80 has also proved to be an unusually durable car. Its body was fully galvanized, which helped protect it from rust. Apart from regular maintenance, Martin says he has never had to replace any major parts. The car still has its original engine, clutch and transmission.
The Audi has taken Martin across Europe, including trips to England and Scotland. During one trip to Norway, however, things took an unexpected turn. Border officials suspected him of drug trafficking and took the car apart, including its interior, roof lining and engine. They found nothing.
Martin plans to celebrate the 1 million-kilometer milestone with his group of friends, known as the Jamajadas. They will have a drink together when the odometer reaches the magic number.
As for the Audi? Martin jokes that after 1 million kilometers, it may simply need a little extra lubrication.
