Belgian Police Officers to Get 696 Euros Annual Pay Raise in 2027

Police officers working in the field across Belgium are set to receive an additional €696 net per year starting January 1, 2027, under a proposal from Interior Minister Bernard Quintin.

The increase applies to operational officers in both local and federal police forces. Police unions are now presenting the proposal to their members.

Quintin said the raise is meant to recognize officers who do difficult and sometimes dangerous work. He also said the extra pay could help attract new recruits to the police.

The government has set aside €30 million for the increase. It is the first part of a €60 million package announced before the summer break. A second phase is planned for 2029 and could include higher meal vouchers for both operational and civilian police staff, although that still needs to be negotiated.

The pay increase also follows through on a promise made by former Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden. A 2024 pay agreement included two €70 increases for police officers, but only the first increase was implemented at the time.

Police unions welcomed the new proposal but said the amount is relatively modest. Vincent Houssin of the VSOA Police union said the increase works out to about €58 per month and described it as a reasonable agreement.

Carl Medo of the NSPV union was more cautious, saying some officers may consider the deal good while others may have expected more. He noted that the negotiations had been long and difficult.
