Can You Still Mow Your Lawn in Belgium in November?

Many people put away their lawnmowers at the end of October, assuming the mowing season is over. But November does not necessarily mean you have to stop cutting your grass.

In Belgium, mild autumn weather can allow grass to keep growing well into November. So, should you mow your lawn this month, or is it better to leave it alone until spring?

The answer depends on the temperature, weather conditions, and how fast your grass is growing.

Does Grass Still Grow in November?

Grass growth slows down significantly during autumn, but it does not stop as soon as November begins.

As long as the soil remains warm enough, grass can continue growing. Garden experts generally consider soil temperatures of around 5 to 8 degrees Celsius to be the point at which grass growth becomes very slow.

This means some lawns in Belgium may still need one final cut in early November, especially after a mild autumn.

There is no fixed date for the last lawn mowing of the year. Instead, check how quickly your grass is growing and keep an eye on the weather forecast.

How Short Should You Cut Your Grass Before Winter?

One of the biggest mistakes people make is cutting their grass too short before winter.

Although a shorter lawn might seem easier to maintain, cutting it too low can leave the grass more vulnerable to cold weather and damage.

For the final mowing of the season, a grass height of around 4 to 5 centimeters is generally recommended.

This leaves enough grass to protect the lawn during winter while preventing it from becoming too long.

However, grass that is left excessively long can flatten under heavy rain, snow, or frost. This can trap moisture and increase the risk of fungal diseases.

Avoid removing too much grass in one cut. A gentle final trim is usually the better option.

Never Mow Wet or Frozen Grass

Temperature is not the only thing to consider when deciding whether to mow your lawn in November.

The condition of the grass is just as important.

Avoid mowing immediately after heavy rain. Wet grass can stick together, making it difficult to achieve an even cut. The lawnmower’s wheels can also leave marks and compact the soil.

You should also avoid mowing when frost has covered the grass.

Frozen grass blades are fragile and can break easily when exposed to the pressure of a lawnmower. This may leave damaged areas that turn brown or yellow.

Choose a dry day when the grass is no longer wet and temperatures are above freezing.

Remove Fallen Leaves From Your Lawn

November is also the time when many trees lose their leaves. While colorful autumn leaves may look attractive, leaving a thick layer on your lawn can cause problems.

Leaves block sunlight and reduce airflow, making it harder for grass to stay healthy. They can also trap moisture and encourage fungal growth.

Regularly remove fallen leaves using a garden rake or a lawnmower with a grass collection bag.

If the leaves are dry, some lawnmowers can collect them while cutting the grass. Use a higher cutting setting to avoid damaging the lawn.

You can also reuse collected leaves by adding them to your compost pile or using them as a protective layer around garden plants.

When Should You Stop Mowing for the Winter?

You can put your lawnmower away when grass growth has almost stopped and temperatures remain consistently low.

At that point, mowing is no longer necessary and can cause more harm than good.

During winter, try to avoid walking on frozen grass whenever possible. Frozen grass blades can break under pressure, leaving brown or yellow patches that may take time to recover in spring.

You can still mow your lawn in Belgium in November, provided the weather is mild, the grass is dry, and it is still growing. Just avoid cutting it too short and give your lawn enough time to prepare for winter.
