Flanders Car Tax 2027: Check How Much You Will Pay

Car owners in Flanders, Belgium, can now check how much annual vehicle tax they will pay under the new 2027 tax system. A new online calculator allows drivers to compare their current road tax with the proposed rates and find out whether they will save money.

The Flemish government launched the comparison tool on October 29, 2026. Drivers only need their licence plate number and the vehicle’s original registration date to see how the reform will affect their annual costs.

How Will Car Tax Change in Flanders in 2027?

From 2027, Flanders will introduce a new system for calculating annual vehicle tax (Jaarlijkse Verkeersbelasting).

For most passenger cars, the new calculation will mainly depend on:

  •  Vehicle weight: Lighter cars will generally pay less tax.
  •  CO₂ emissions: Cars producing fewer emissions will benefit from lower rates.
  •  Engine size: Cars with engines larger than 2,400 cc will face a slightly higher tax.

According to Flemish Finance Minister Ben Weyts, more than 80% of car owners are expected to benefit from lower annual vehicle taxes.

How to Calculate Your New Car Tax in Belgium

Drivers can already use the official Flemish government calculator to compare their current tax with the proposed 2027 rate.

Follow these steps:

1. Visit the official website: https://www.vlaanderen.be/vergelijker

2. Change the website language to your preferred language, then enter your vehicle’s licence plate number.

3. Provide the vehicle’s original registration date.

4. Check the comparison between your current annual road tax and the proposed 2027 amount.

The calculator will show whether the new system could save you money.

What If Your New Car Tax Is Lower?

If the calculator shows that your vehicle will benefit from a lower tax rate, you can choose to switch to the new system immediately.

However, if your current tax is cheaper, you do not need to do anything. You can remain under the existing system until you purchase another vehicle.

This is particularly important for some older cars and vehicles with larger engines.

Special Tax Rules for Electric Cars, Vans and Classic Cars

Some vehicles will follow separate tax arrangements under the new rules.

  • Electric cars: Vehicles registered before January 1, 2026, remain exempt from annual vehicle tax. Electric cars registered from 2026 will pay a reduced annual rate of 107.16 euros.
  •  Leasing cars: Existing favorable tax arrangements will remain unchanged.
  •  Light commercial vans: Owners will receive a 30% reduction in annual vehicle tax. Eligible professional users may also deduct up to 100% of road vignette and vehicle tax costs as business expenses.
  • Classic cars: Annual vehicle tax will fall by 30%, from 109.73 euros to 73.71 euros.

Classic car owners will also be able to purchase a daily road vignette instead of an annual one if they only occasionally use major roads.

Belgium Introduces a New Road Vignette in May 2027

Another important change will affect motorists across Belgium.

From May 1, 2027, a new road vignette is planned for all three Belgian regions: Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels.

The aim is to make foreign motorists contribute towards the maintenance of Belgium’s road infrastructure. However, under European rules, Belgium cannot charge foreign drivers alone, meaning Belgian motorists will also have to pay.

The planned annual vignette prices will depend on vehicle emissions:

  • Electric vehicles: 90 euros.
  •  Vehicles meeting at least Euro 4 emissions standards: 100 euros.
  •  The most polluting vehicles: 125 euros.

This additional charge must be considered when calculating the total cost of owning a car in 2027.

The Flemish government estimates that even after including the new road vignette, more than half of motorists in Flanders will pay less overall or experience little to no change in their annual costs.

Will Car Owners in Flanders Save Money in 2027?

Although more than 80% of car owners are expected to benefit from lower annual vehicle tax, not everyone will necessarily save money.

The new road vignette could offset some of the savings, depending on the vehicle and its emissions.

The easiest way to find out is to use the official calculator and compare the two tax systems using your own vehicle details.

The new vehicle tax system applies to Flanders, while the planned road vignette will cover all three Belgian regions from May 1, 2027.
