Man in Vegetative State Called to Trial in Belgium
Marc P., the man who was beaten into a coma by Grégory Lenoci and has remained in a vegetative state since the attack, has been summoned to appear in court on Thursday in an abuse case, according to Belgian news outlet RTL Info.
Marc P. is the defendant in a case involving allegations that he abused a 7-year-old girl. He is also accused of producing and possessing images of child sexual abuse.
Why Marc P. Was Attacked?
Earlier this month, Grégory Lenoci was sentenced to 17 years in prison after attacking Marc P. at his home in the summer of last year.
Lenoci had suspected his neighbor of abusing his stepson. He went to the man’s home, severely assaulted him and recorded parts of the incident, later sharing footage on social media.
Marc P. was left in a coma after the attack and has remained in a vegetative state ever since.
Although Marc P. had previously been convicted of child abuse, investigators found no incriminating evidence linking him to the alleged abuse of Lenoci’s stepson.
Court Hearing in Namur
Despite his medical condition, Marc P. has been formally summoned to appear before a court in Namur on Thursday. The hearing is an initial session in the abuse case.
However, his condition means that he will not be able to physically attend court. He is expected to be represented by a lawyer instead.
The investigation into the case has been completed, and the court’s decision to summon Marc P. indicates that proceedings are moving forward.
It remains unclear how the court will proceed given his medical condition. The judge could potentially issue a ruling in his absence or postpone the case indefinitely, waiting to see whether he may eventually become capable of appearing in court.
Father Criticizes Lenoci
The father of the 7-year-old girl at the center of the case has strongly criticized Lenoci’s actions.
Speaking to RTL Info, he said that Lenoci had caused what he described as an immense injustice to him and his daughter by taking the law into his own hands.
According to the father, Lenoci’s actions deprived the family of the opportunity for a fair legal process and made it more difficult for them to move forward.
He also said that important questions may remain unanswered, which he considers essential for the family’s recovery.
