US Ambassador Bill White Meets Belgium Foreign Minister
U.S. Ambassador to Belgium Bill White is scheduled to meet Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot on Monday at 2:30 p.m., following the leak of an internal Belgian government memo about the country’s relationship with the United States.
The meeting comes just days after the document became public and sparked questions about Belgium’s assessment of its long-standing alliance with Washington.
What the Leaked Memo Says?
The internal working document was written in late 2025 and argued that the United States was no longer the same ally it had been in the past. The assessment came amid changes in the U.S. approach toward Europe and called for Belgium to reconsider how it manages its relationship with Washington while maintaining dialogue with the American government.
However, Belgian officials have stressed that the document was not an approved government policy.
Prévot’s office previously described it as an internal working document that had not been formally adopted. White also said the memo does not represent Belgium’s official position toward the United States.
In a statement following the leak, White emphasized the continuing importance of the relationship between Belgium and the United States.
“The meeting offers an opportunity to reaffirm the strength and lasting importance of the relationship between Belgium and the United States,” the ambassador said in a statement.
Earlier Tensions Between White and Prévot
Monday’s meeting also comes after several disagreements between White and Prévot in recent months.
The Belgian foreign minister has previously summoned the U.S. ambassador after White publicly intervened in Belgian political debates, including comments directed at Belgian politicians on social media.
In August, Prévot called White in after the ambassador posted an AI-generated image targeting Belgian Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke during a debate over health warnings in alcohol advertising. White later said he had promised Prévot to refrain from making derogatory statements about Belgian officials and to raise concerns directly with the Belgian government first.
The latest meeting therefore takes place against a broader backdrop of disagreements, while both countries continue to emphasize the importance of their diplomatic and economic relationship.
