Porsche Driver Crashes Into Carrefour in Belgium
A 33-year-old man from Zwevegem is being sought by police after crashing his Porsche into a Carrefour Market supermarket in Avelgem, West Flanders, on Sunday night and fleeing the scene.
The crash happened around 9 p.m. on Doorniksesteenweg after the driver reportedly lost control of his black Porsche Turbo for reasons that remain under investigation. The car first slammed into the window of a Century 21 real estate office before crossing the road and crashing through the entrance of the Carrefour Market.
The impact caused extensive damage, leaving debris scattered across the street and destroying the supermarket’s automatic sliding doors. The Century 21 building also suffered major damage, and firefighters had to reinforce both buildings because of concerns about structural stability.
Passenger Left Behind After Crash
The driver reportedly fled the scene with several friends after they helped him out of the Porsche. A female passenger, however, was left behind inside the vehicle and had to be rescued by emergency crews.
The woman suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital. According to a local resident, she had only met the driver at a bar shortly before the crash.
Remarkably, no other road users were involved and no one else was injured.
Police Search for 33-Year-Old Driver
Police identified the driver as a 33-year-old man from neighboring Zwevegem and are currently searching for him.
Authorities said alcohol or drugs may have played a role, but the investigation will have to determine what caused the crash and whether the driver was under the influence.
The Porsche narrowly missed a concrete pole near the supermarket entrance. The mayor of Avelgem, Lut Deseyn, said the two people involved were fortunate because hitting the pole could have resulted in a much more serious outcome.
The crash caused major disruption in the area, with Doorniksesteenweg temporarily closed while emergency crews cleared the scene.
Carrefour workers continued cleaning up and repairing the damage late into the night. The supermarket’s owner said the business was expected to reopen, using its second entrance while the damaged section was closed off.
The Porsche itself was reportedly so badly damaged that it was taken away as a total wreck.
