PFAS Linked to Cholesterol and Liver Changes

People in Flanders who have higher levels of PFAS in their blood also tend to have slightly higher cholesterol and some changes in liver test results, according to a new study by KU Leuven and VITO/PIH.

The study, commissioned by the Flemish Department of Care, examined blood samples from 1,743 people. Most of them live near the 3M factory in Zwijndrecht, an area affected by PFAS pollution.

PFAS are chemicals that can stay in the environment and the human body for a long time. The researchers found that people with higher PFAS levels were more likely to have slightly higher cholesterol and changes in liver tests.

However, the study does not prove that PFAS caused these health changes. It only shows a link between higher PFAS levels and these results.

Professor Gijs Van Pottelbergh of KU Leuven said there is no reason to panic or immediately ask a doctor for a PFAS blood test. He said the changes found in the study were limited and do not indicate an immediate health risk.

The researchers also found no link between PFAS levels and thyroid problems or heart and blood vessel disease.

Van Pottelbergh said the findings are similar to results from studies in other countries. More research is still needed to understand the effects of long-term exposure to PFAS, especially after 30, 40 or 50 years.

Flemish Health Minister Caroline Gennez said the findings show the need to reduce PFAS pollution. The government is working to reduce PFAS use and is investigating pollution in different parts of Flanders, including through tests of eggs from private gardens.

Experts advise people to follow basic healthy habits, such as not smoking, exercising and eating a healthy diet. People in areas affected by PFAS pollution should also avoid unnecessary exposure.

Authorities advise residents in affected areas to limit home-grown fruit and vegetables, avoid eating eggs and small livestock raised at home, and not use groundwater as drinking water.

The study is part of wider research into PFAS pollution in Belgium and its possible long-term effects on people’s health.
