Nine People Injured in Tram Collision in Mortsel

Nine people were injured, including two who suffered serious injuries, after two trams collided Wednesday afternoon in Mortsel, Antwerp province, according to Belgian police and public transport operator De Lijn.
The accident happened at around 12:50 p.m. at the Hof Savelkoul stop on Liersesteenweg, near Klimboom Primary School. One tram crashed into the back of another tram that was traveling ahead of it.

Belgian police said two people suffered serious injuries, including the 41-year-old tram driver who caused the collision and a 35-year-old man. Authorities confirmed that none of the injuries were life-threatening.
Seven other people suffered minor injuries. All of them were passengers on one of the trams. Initial reports indicated five minor injuries, but the number was later updated to seven.

De Lijn is still investigating the cause of the accident, including the possibility that a technical or mechanical failure may have led to the collision.
The crash also disrupted tram service on part of the A3 tram line between Mortsel Gemeenteplein and the Boechout stop during the afternoon. The transport operator is considering providing replacement buses to keep passengers moving.
