Drone Spotted Again at Brussels Airport for the Second Day in a Row

A drone was spotted near Brussels Airport on Saturday evening, marking the second day in a row that a drone has been detected near the airport.

Kurt Verwilligen, a spokesperson for Belgian air traffic control provider Skeyes, confirmed that there was another drone incident on Saturday.

Unlike Friday’s incident, when the drone was seen visually by an air traffic controller and airport security staff, the drone on Saturday was both seen and detected electronically. Verwilligen said the incident lasted only a very short time and was a one-time detection.

When a drone is detected at an airport, Skeyes activates its “Rogue Drone Procedure.” This means aircraft cannot operate in the area where the drone is flying, with the restriction normally lasting at least 30 minutes.

Air traffic at Brussels Airport was able to resume at 8:20 p.m. on Saturday.

Brussels Airport said its staff did not receive a report about a possible drone on Saturday. Airport spokesperson Quentin Mertens said there were no flight diversions or delays linked to the incident.

Friday’s drone sighting caused more disruption. Three flights were diverted. Two aircraft were sent to Ostend Airport and one to Liège Airport, while other flights were not delayed.

The latest incident comes as Belgian authorities continue to deal with growing concerns about drones operating near airports and other sensitive locations.
